What this is
A place to run into each other
There is no shortage of people doing technical work between London, Corbin, Somerset and Manchester. There is just nowhere for them to run into each other. Everyone drives to Lexington or Knoxville for that, or does without.
We are starting with a Slack rather than a monthly meetup, and that is deliberate. A chat room works on day one with six people in it. A meetup with six people in it is a bad night out. Get the people first, and the meetups follow.
When there are enough of us, we will work out where to meet and how often. That gets decided in the Slack by the people who actually turn up, not in advance by the two of us.
Brand new and small. Nothing is scheduled and no venue is booked. If you join now you are one of the first people in, which means you get a say in what this turns into rather than showing up to something already decided.

Broader than you’re assuming
If you are wondering whether you count, you count. In a place this size a narrow door is fatal, so the door is wide on purpose.
Geographically we mean roughly a 45 minute drive of London, Kentucky: Corbin, Somerset, Barbourville, Williamsburg, Manchester and everywhere in between. Slack has no geography though, so if you are further out and still want in, say so on the form.

Reasonable questions
Does it cost anything?
No. Slack’s free tier and a domain name, both covered. If that ever changes you will hear about it before it does, not after.
Do I have to work in tech?
No. Students, hobbyists and people trying to switch into it are all welcome. Curiosity is the whole entry requirement.
Do I have to present anything?
No. Nobody is on the hook for anything. If you do eventually want to talk about something you have built or broken, there will be room for it.
Why do you review requests instead of just letting people in?
So the room stays actual people from around here rather than recruiters and bots. That is the only thing being checked. It is not a test of how technical you are.
When is the first meetup?
Not scheduled, and we would rather say so than invent a date. Slack first, then a meetup once there are enough people to make it worth driving to.
